Background: Falling is one of the most common problems in the elderly and can cause other health problems for them. This study aimed to determine the effect of the multicomponent program on fall incidence and quality of life in nursing home resident elders.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design. The study population comprised of 55 elders residing in nursing homes. The intervention includes a multicomponent program included physical activities, training sessions and physical environment modifications in nursing homes that was performed for eight weeks. Data collection tools included socio-demographic characteristics form and questionnaires pertaining to the quality of life and fear of fall, which were completed by participants before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 18.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 68.48 years, and most of them (90%) were illiterate. A significant difference was found between the mean number of falls and the scores of fear of falling before and after the intervention (P<0.001). Besides, there was a significant difference between the total quality of life scores and all dimensions related to it before and after the intervention, indicating after the intervention the elderly’s quality of life has improved (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, multicomponent fall prevention program was effective in quality of life, fall rate and fear of falling among elderly residents in nursing homes. Further studies will be needed to explore the effect of these interventions in the long-term.
