Background and Objective: Studies’ results signify that critical care nurses lack desirable performance in performing endotracheal tube suctioning (ETS) despite necessary training during the study period. This study aimed to investigate and compare the effect of education through video and performance feedback on nurses’ skills in performing ETS.
Materials and Methods: This was a Quasi-Experimental study. The sample size comprised of all nurses (n=44) working in the critical care unit (CCU) of one of the educational hospital located in one of the western cities of Iran. Samples selected using convenience sampling method and divided randomly into two education group via performance feedback and educational video. A standard checklist was used to monitor nurses’ practice in endotracheal suctioning. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.
Results: After the intervention, no significant difference was found in the total mean score of nurses’ practice in ETS between those who received education through educational video and those who received through performance feedback (16.3 vs 15.1) (P-0.737). Before and after the intervention, a significant improvement was observed in the total mean score and other dimensions of nurses’ practice in endotracheal suctioning (P<0.0001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that none of the specialty nurses (even nurses with high work experience) performed well in endotracheal suctioning in pre-test stage and all nurses performed post-test in both in-service feedback and training. Through the film it improved almost the same. However, the results of this study require longer monitoring and more accurate design.
