In the span of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of deaths due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been increasing in a daily fashion. Morbidity and mortality among patients with or without comorbidities also suffering from COVID-19, demonstrates marked pattern variation. Such different patterns can be traced back to the genetic makeup of the host. Presently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found in the genetic framework of the host, can be used to assign therapeutic approach or characterise the prognosis of many different viral infections. One SNP of note is IFITM3, certain genotypes of which can predict disease severity. These SNPs have a determinant influence on the natural history of many viral infections. To date, the impact of these SNPs on the progression or control of the SARS-CoV-2 infection has not been studied in Iran. Specification of these SNPs in the Iranian population may introduce new means of viral infection control. Therefore, this study may provide the preliminary basis of the correlation between the genetic character of the host and viral infection.
