Abstract:   (776 Views)
Introduction:
Functional abdominal pain is a continuous or nearly continuous pain. There is no
relationship between physiological events and pain. The pain will lose some os daily
functions and is not feigned. There isn't sufficient symptoms to meet criteria for
another functional gastrointestinal disorder. This criteria must be fulfilled for the last 3
months with symptom onset at least 6 months prior to diagnosis. The pain is very
common in children and although benign in nature is associated with anxiety, school
absenteeism, frequent clinic visits, unnecessary testing and significant economic
burden.
Material and methods:
This study was conducted in the form of double blind clinical trial on a statistical
population of 104 children aged 5-15 years old who were suffering from functional
abdominal pain with the above criteria. In this study, after blood, urine and stool
sample analysis and performing an abdominopelvic sonography to rule out organic
disorders, the patients were divided into two groups: One group went under treatment
with saccharomyces boulardii (250mg BDS) and the other group started the process
using placebo. The patients took drug or placebo for three weeks and were also
followed for three weeks without medication. During this six week period, the severity
of the patient’s pain was assessed by trained mothers based on oucher pain scale.
Eventually the data was analyzed by statistical software SPSS.
Results:
57 of the patients were girls and the other 47 were boys. 55% of the patients were 5-10
years old and 45% were 10-15 years old. Using variance analysis, we compared the
pain score in treatment and control groups and found out that the drug effects show no
significant difference in various age (p-value: 0.928) or sex (p-value: 0.437) groups.
Comparing the control and treatment groups, Treatment with saccharomyces boulardii
was proved to be effective (p-value: 0.00); and the least amount of pain and the
highest difference between the two groups was seen in the fifth week.
Conclusion:
Considering the effectiveness of saccharomyces boulardii in treating children’s
functional abdominal pain, this probiotic can be used to cure this pain, which will
result in reduced school absenteeism, anxiety, frequent clinical visits and economic
burden.
