Objectives: nowadays, the emergence of antibiotic resistance has surpassed the discovery of new antibiotics. One of the strategies that cause pathogenic bacteria, such as S.aureus, by which develop chronic and treatment-resistant infections is biofilms formation. Traditionally use of Espand, has a long history in Iran. In this study, we exanimate the anti-biofilm property of the alcoholic extract of espand on S.aureus isolated from burn patients.
Methods: 42 isolates of S.aureus were divided from the wounds of burn patients and assess their ability for biofilm formation then exanimated for determination of biofilm-related genes, icaD and icaA. Toxicity of this extract was measured on Vero cells by determining IC50. Also >IC50 concentration were investigate on biofilm and icaA and icaD expression.
Results: Our results in this study showed that S.aureus is able to form different degrees of biofilm. Espand is toxic for Vero cells at the concentration of 35 μg / ml and can easily inhibit Staphylococcus aureus biofilm at the concentration of 9 μg / ml.
Conclusion: Espand is one kind of common Iranian herbal medicin. This study showed that Espand have inhibitory effect on S.aureus biofilm and transcript levels of icaA, icaD were significantly decresed upon the addition of P.harmalla, but the determination of pharmacokinetic details and further studies on laboratory models can approveits effectiveness, to allow us to use it as an alternative in the treatment of infection caused by the pathogen.
