Background: Numerous studies have focused on investigating the role of iron serum in the emergence, and development, of cardiovascular diseases (CVD); these studies have produced varying results. The present systematic meta-analytical review was aimed at investigating the relationship between the level of iron serum and the development of CVDs.
Methods: The present study conducted a systematic meta-analytical review of the articles published between 7110-7102. In so doing, two independent researchers used appropriate keywords to search medical databases of SID (Scientific Information Database), Mag Iran, Iran doc, Med lib, Iran med ex, Direct Science, Scopus, Google, and Pub Med; collected data, then, was analyzed using SPSS 0.61.
Results: According to the results of the meta-analysis study, mean serum iron was 7562.±75622
μmol/L in heart disease group; thus, there turned out to be a significant difference, with a confidence level of %29 (P=.110), between the groups with and without heart disease in this regard. The mean level of ferritin serum was 0126127±.16717 μmol/L in the heart disease group, indicating a significant difference between two groups (P=.110).
Conclusion: As an essential element, iron is needed to maintain the natural structure of cells and cell viability; moreover, regardless of other risk factors, ferritin, as the representative of total iron in the body, turned out to be more common in cardiovascular patients compared to the group without the disease, which can be attributed to the probable role of iron storage in causing CVD.
