Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in children worldwide. (1). More than 165 million cases of Shigella are reported each year, resulting in the death of 1.1 million people (3.5). The main route of transmission of shigellosis is from one person to another through the oral fecal tract (5). In this study, pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method is used to determine Shigella flexnery types. PFGE is one of the best methods used in typology and epidemiological studies in different regions, this method with high reproducibility and differentiation Which can be used for all human pathogens (19). PFGE is considered the gold standard for most bacteria due to its high differentiation power and is also one of the most important molecular methods for epidemiological studies and bacterial typing (18). Unfortunately, in Ahvaz, municipal sewage is discharged into the Karun River, which is the main source of drinking for the people of the region and irrigation of agricultural products. This issue pollutes the river water with various intestinal pathogens, including Shigella. Due to the ease of transmission of Shigella through oral fecal routes and low dose of bacterial pathogenicity, Karun River water pollution to municipal wastewater is a major risk for Shigella and in addition, the tropical climate of Ahvaz causes a critical outbreak of Shigella in the region. Be. In recent years, due to the arbitrary use of antibiotics, the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Shigella species has increased. And finding the right way to control the infection seems vital. The purpose of typing studies on strains of a particular bacterium is to provide laboratory evidence for genetic association of strains isolated from patients. Typing information is needed to know how to control the spread of disease in the community. Due to our limited information about the common Shigella flexneri clones in Ahvaz and their relationship with the distribution of resistance genes in the region, we decided in a study on Shigella flexneri samples collected in different years to study the molecular epidemiology and identify clones. Common during different years in Ahvaz with PFGE method.
